Osprey Eja 58 (women’s) review: a light pack that carries comfortably
A lighter pack saves effort on every climb, but only if it still moves the load onto the hips. The Osprey Eja 58 is a women’s pack that weighs under 3 pounds (1.4 kg) and keeps a full frame, a ventilated back panel and an adjustable torso length.
New to fitting a pack? Our guide to fitting and packing a backpack covers torso length, hip belt position and where the weight goes.
Quick take
A light, comfortable women’s pack for trips of several days. The Eja 58 carries loads of about 35 pounds (16 kg) or less comfortably on a suspended mesh back panel, the torso length adjusts in seconds, and it weighs 2 pounds 11 ounces (1.22 kg) in the smaller size. The hip belt is thinly padded and does not adjust for shape, the straps and buckles are light, and it is not the pack for heavy loads. Choose it when your gear is reasonably light and compact.
What it does
The Eja 58 is the women’s version of Osprey’s light backpacking pack, with shoulder straps curved for a narrower fit across the chest. A tensioned mesh panel holds the pack body away from your back so air moves behind it, and an aluminum frame around the edge transfers the load to the hip belt. The torso length adjusts over 4 inches (10 cm) by sliding the shoulder harness, which can be done with the pack loaded.
It loads from the top through a drawstring opening. The lid has two zipped pockets and comes off to save weight, and a fabric flap then covers the opening. Outside there is a large stretch pocket on the front, a stretch pocket on each side that takes a one-litre bottle, two small zipped pockets on the hip belt, compression straps, and a sleeve inside for a water reservoir. The body is 100-denier recycled nylon ripstop with heavier 400-denier fabric on the base. No rain cover is included.
Sizes and capacity
There are two sizes. The XS/S holds 55 litres, weighs 2 pounds 11 ounces (1.22 kg) and fits torso lengths of 13.5 to 17 inches (34 to 43 cm). The M/L holds 58 litres, weighs 2 pounds 13 ounces (1.28 kg) and fits torso lengths of 16 to 19.5 inches (41 to 50 cm). Measure your torso before ordering, and if you can, try the pack on with 15 to 20 pounds (7 to 9 kg) inside, because the hip belt cannot be changed for shape.
What verified buyers say
Across verified-purchase reviews, the same points come up:
- Comfortable over long distances. Owners report no shoulder or back pain on eight-day trips with about 35 pounds (16 kg), and over hundreds of miles on long trails.
- A cool back. The mesh panel keeps the pack off the back, and the lack of sweat is mentioned often.
- Fits small and narrow frames. Women of 5 feet 2 inches (157 cm), and those with long torsos and lean builds, say the adjustable harness made it fit where other packs did not.
- Useful pockets. The front and side stretch pockets and the hip belt pockets get constant use.
- Light straps and fittings. A few owners found the narrow compression straps and load lifters slipped under a heavy load, and one had a rubber fastener wear out early.
- Not for every shape or load. The most critical reviews describe the load sitting too far back and pulling on the shoulders. Several owners advise trying it loaded before a trip.
Worth knowing
The Eja is a light pack, and the weight is saved in the hip belt, straps and fabric. The hip belt has thin padding and a fixed shape, which suits narrower hips better than fuller ones. The suspended back panel holds the load slightly away from your body; with a heavy or badly packed load that pulls you backward, so keep dense items close to your back and the total at about 35 pounds (16 kg) or less. The side pockets are hard to reach when the compression straps are tight, the hip belt pockets are small, and the lid does not convert to a day pack. Carry a pack liner or buy a rain cover.
Who it is for
The Eja 58 is for women who backpack regularly with a reasonably light kit, on trips from a weekend to a long-distance trail, and who want less pack weight without giving up a frame and a ventilated back. It suits small and slim frames well.
If you carry heavier loads, or want a more padded hip belt that adjusts for shape, the Osprey Atmos AG 65 has a heavier-duty suspension, and its women’s version is the Aura AG 65. For day hikes, see the Osprey Talon 22. The men’s version of the Eja is the Osprey Exos 58.

The Verdict
The Osprey Eja 58 is a light women’s pack that carries well: a ventilated back, an adjustable torso and a real frame at under 3 pounds (1.4 kg), and independent testers rank it first among women’s backpacking packs. The hip belt is thin and fixed in shape, and the pack is at its best with about 35 pounds (16 kg) or less. For regular backpacking with a light kit it is a sound choice. For heavier loads, look at the Osprey Atmos AG 65 and its women’s version, the Aura AG 65.
