Brooks Cascadia 19 trail running shoe, women's

Brooks Cascadia 19 (women’s) review: stability and protection for mountain trail

On a rocky trail, a light shoe with a thin sole makes you pick every step, and by afternoon the soles of your feet ache. The women's Brooks Cascadia 19 is built for exactly that ground: a flexible rock plate, a thin stiff layer under the foam that spreads the load of a sharp stone, a wide and stable platform, and soft cushioning, on a women's last with a wide option.

Quick take

A protective, stable trail runner for rocky, rooty trail. The articulated rock plate blocks sharp stones, the wide base feels secure on uneven ground, and the DNA LOFT v3 foam is comfortable from the first mile with good arch support. It is heavier than most trail runners, grip in deep mud is only fair, and the toe box is standard rather than roomy. The all-rounder we would pick for most three-season hiking.

What it does

The women's Cascadia 19 shares the men's design on a women's last. The Trail Adapt System combines a flexible Ballistic Rock Shield with the midsole, protecting against sharp rock while letting the shoe bend over uneven ground. Nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 foam softens landings in the heel and forefoot. The TrailTack Green rubber outsole grips on wet and dry surfaces, and a mesh upper with 3D-printed overlays, a reinforced toe cap and a mudguard fends off rock strikes. The heel sits about 6 mm above the forefoot, and the women's shoe weighs about 9.8 oz (278 g) each. It comes in regular and wide widths.

What verified buyers say

Across verified-purchase reviews, the same points come up:

  • Comfort is the headline. Owners describe feet that do not hurt after long wear, and several compare it favourably with softer road-style trail shoes.
  • Traction gets real praise. Grip on trail is one of the most frequently mentioned strengths.
  • Arch support and stability stand out. Owners note decent arch support and a supportive, secure feel on uneven ground.
  • It feels lighter than it is. Despite the protective build, owners describe it as lightweight on foot.
  • Durability and value are mixed. A minority report the shoe wearing sooner than expected or question whether it justifies its cost.

Worth knowing

This is a protective shoe, and protection adds weight; on smooth, fast trail a lighter shoe will feel livelier. The lugs are moderate, so deep mud clogs the outsole and grip drops off. The toe box is a standard width, so if your toes are cramped in most shoes, choose the wide version or a foot-shaped shoe such as the Altra Lone Peak 9. The Cascadia 20 is now out, so expect sizes of the 19 to thin over time.

Who it is for

The women's Cascadia 19 is for day hikers and light backpackers on rocky, rooty and uneven mountain trail who want comfort, stability and underfoot protection in a trail runner. If you mostly walk maintained trails and want a softer, lighter shoe, the Brooks Ghost Trail is the gentler choice. For a roomy toe box and zero drop on very long days, try the Altra Lone Peak 9. For heavy loads, snow and cold wet seasons, step up to a boot such as the Merrell Moab 3.

The Verdict

The women's Cascadia 19 is the trail runner for hikers whose trails are more rock and root than smooth dirt. It combines real underfoot protection with a stable, comfortable ride and reliable grip, and it offers a wide option for those who need it. It is not the lightest or roomiest shoe here, but for most three-season mountain hiking, that is a trade worth making. The men's version is covered in our men's Cascadia 19 review, and choosing between trail runners, boots and approach shoes is in hiking boots, trail runners, or approach shoes.
