  • Signature feature: Fall Creek Falls, 256 feet (78 m), the highest waterfall in Tennessee
  • Waterfalls: seven signature falls on trails, and dozens more in the backcountry

The landscape

Fall Creek Falls sits on the Cumberland Plateau, where streams have cut deep gorges into the sandstone, dropping in waterfalls such as Fall Creek, Cane Creek and Piney falls. Hardwood forest and hemlock fill the gorges, with old-growth trees in places. Deer, wild turkeys and many birds live here.

Best time to go

Spring brings the strongest waterfalls. Fall colour peaks in late October. Summer is warm and busy; winter is quiet.

Getting there and around

The park is reached by state highways across the plateau. Roads lead to overlooks, the village area, campgrounds and trailheads. Overnight loops and backcountry campsites are reached on foot.

Things to do

Overlooks give easy views of the main falls, and a steep trail leads to its base. The Cable Trail and Gorge Overlook trails explore the gorges, and overnight loops lead to backcountry sites. The park also has a lake, cabins and a lodge.

Staying safe

Gorge edges are sheer; stay behind barriers. Rock near waterfalls is slippery, and streams rise after rain. Leave a trip plan for overnight trips.
