The landscape

Fort Mountain rises on the edge of the Cohutta Mountains in northwest Georgia, with hardwood forest, blueberry thickets, streams and a small lake. On the summit stands a mysterious wall of stacked rock, 855 feet (260 m) long, thought to have been built by early Native Americans for defence or ceremony. Black bears, deer and many birds live here.

Best time to go

Spring and fall are ideal, with fall colour from late October. Summer is warm and busy at the lake beach. Winter is quiet, with occasional ice.

Getting there and around

Highway 52 climbs from Chatsworth to the park. Roads lead to the lake, campground and trailheads. The backpacking sites are reached on the Gahuti Trail, which loops around the mountain.

Things to do

The Gahuti Trail offers an easy overnight backpack on a loop with backcountry sites. Short trails lead to the stone wall, the fire tower and overlooks. Mountain bikers and horse riders use their own trail network, and the lake offers swimming and paddling in summer.

Staying safe

Trails can be rocky and steep. Black bears are active, so store food properly at backcountry sites. Summer thunderstorms build quickly. Leave a trip plan for backpacking trips.
